K1 Arneis 2010
Arneis is a rare variety originating from Piedmont in Northwest Italy. After WWII Arneis almost became extinct as it is notoriously difficult to grow, hence it has earned the nickname "Little Rascal". Luckily a few viticulturists around the world have rediscovered this exceptional variety, and are now producing stunning wines from this little rascal.
The 2010 season was nourished by rainfall from May till October when it tapered off quickly. Spring bud burst was good with a moderate crop showing which was then reduced a little in many varieties during flowering due to the hottest November heat wave in SA history (6 days over 37°C). The rest of the growing season was near perfect. Whilst yields were down, it was an early vintage and the quality of almost all varieties looks fantastic.
This wine captures Arneis' varietal definition brilliantly, including savoury notes of almonds and fruit characters of pear and white peach, lovely hints of aromatic herbs add to the complexity of this wine.
Arneis is a perfect accompaniment to full flavoured seafood dishes and antipasti.
