What Geoff Hardy has contributed so far to the Australian wine industry is nothing short of amazing.
He has consulted to over 100 vineyards in Australia and overseas as well as planting more than 20 vineyards. He was the founder of large scale 'top working' (grafting) to change varieties depending on market demand. In 1979 to 1981 he helped quadruple the South Australian dryland area of Chardonnay through grafting onto unwanted varieties.
He has planted vines in new regions as well as introduced unusual varieties including Tannat, Lagrein, Siegerebe, and Sylvaner. He has also designed several pieces of vineyard machinery. His varietal clonal trials have helped supply up to five million superior vine cuttings per year.
His own wines are award winners as well as his vineyards, which supply fruit for premium brands like Yattarna. His aims? To help reduce irrigation water usage while improving the viability of Australian vineyards, to continue the fight against salinisation of water resources and to help Australia become the premier, top quality, value for money, wine producing country in the world.
